Cover of the book "Between the World and Me"

Between the World and Me, which won the National Book Award for Non-Fiction in 2015, and was selected for numerous “best book of the year” lists, is described by the publisher as “a profound work that pivots from the biggest questions about American history and ideals to the most intimate concerns of a father for his son [and] offers a powerful new framework for understanding our nation’s history [of racial injustice] and current crisis.”

Written as a letter from Coates to his adolescent son, the book “clearly illuminates the past, bracingly confronts our present, and offers a transcendent vision for a way forward.”
