Gov. DeWine visited students in “Leading Men Fellowship” program at CState

Ohio Governor Mike DeWine visited Cincinnati State on October 12 to meet with early childhood educators, including two Cincinnati State students who are working in the College’s William L. Mallory Early Learning Center.

Students Demontay Brunner and Yoshua Simms are part of the Leading Men Fellowship program sponsored by The Cincinnati Literacy Lab organization.

Gov. DeWine’s visit to the College was covered by several media outlets, including TV stations WKRC, WCPO, and WLWT, and WVXU radio.

The Governor was greeted by President Monica Posey and Trustee George Vincent, as well as faculty from Cincinnati State’s Early Childhood Education (ECE) program and representatives of Learning Grove, the organization that manages the Mallory Center. The Governor visited the ECE learning lab as well as the Mallory Center.

The Leading Men Fellowship program recruits young men of color to provide educational support to pre-kindergarten students. The program goal is to increase the number of men of color who are preparing for careers in early childhood education.

The Literacy Lab serves students “from age three through grade three” by partnering with schools “to help close the literacy gap by embedding full-time, trained tutors who provide evidence-based, culturally responsive literacy instruction.”
