Juneteenth campus celebration on June 16 will include food, music, and more

Cincinnati State students and employees are invited to the College’s Juneteenth Celebration on Thursday, June 16.

The celebration takes place in the ATLC Courtyard (Clifton Campus) from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. If weather is a problem, the activities will move to the ATLC First Floor.

Juneteenth is a celebration of freedom that commemorates the date June 19, 1865– about two months after the U.S. Civil War ended– when enslaved African-Americans in Galveston, Texas, were informed that President Abraham Lincoln had issued the Emancipation Proclamation about two and a half years earlier, abolishing slavery in the U.S.

Juneteenth was established as a federal holiday in 2021. This year, the official holiday (College closed day) is celebrated on June 20 since June 19 is a Sunday.

  • Attendees at the College Juneteenth celebration should check in on the ATLC First Floor (cafeteria side) to get a Juneteenth commemorative cookie and a food voucher that can be used at the Overlook, or at the visiting food truck from D Fish, D Chicken.
  • A brief program will take place at noon, featuring Cincinnati State President Dr. Monica Posey and History Professor Daniel Anderson, who will speak about the meaning and importance of Juneteenth.
  • DJ Butch Gibson will keep the festival lively, and a variety of artisans will display their creative works.

Join your Cincinnati State colleagues on June 16 to honor and celebrate those who paved the way in support of freedom and liberation.
