Background:
National Donut Day was established in 1938 by The Salvation Army as a tribute to the “Donut Lassies,” a group of volunteers who prepared donuts for thousands of soldiers during World War I.
These volunteers were the only female nonmilitary personnel stationed on the front lines. They prepared donuts inside U.S. soldiers’ steel helmets, using only hot oil and a stove.
The “Lassies” provided care and support to soldiers who were far from home, and donuts represented a taste of home, sweetness, and comfort.
Today, The Salvation Army serves hundreds of thousands of veterans in need every year, providing counseling, case management, nights of shelter, employment services, and treatment for post traumatic stress disorder and substance abuse.
