Friday, June 5, is National Donut Day, an annual fundraising event sponsored by The Salvation Army and the Greater Cincinnati Retail Bakers Association.

You can support Donut Day at Cincinnati State’s Bakery Hill by purchasing a donut for $1, or ordering a box of six glazed donuts (with vanilla or chocolate glaze) for just $5.

The Salvation Army Red Kettle will be available if you want to make a donation when you order or pick up your donuts.

Background:

National Donut Day was established in 1938 by The Salvation Army as a tribute to the “Donut Lassies,” a group of volunteers who prepared donuts for thousands of soldiers during World War I.

These volunteers were the only female nonmilitary personnel stationed on the front lines. They prepared donuts inside U.S. soldiers’ steel helmets, using only hot oil and a stove.

The “Lassies” provided care and support to soldiers who were far from home, and donuts represented a taste of home, sweetness, and comfort.

Today, The Salvation Army serves hundreds of thousands of veterans in need every year, providing counseling, case management, nights of shelter, employment services, and treatment for post traumatic stress disorder and substance abuse.
