Cincy State faculty member leads programs and projects for national professional organization

Dr. Kevin Skinner, a full-time instructor in the Cincinnati State Chemistry department, has been invited by the American Chemical Society (ACS) to serve on the Advisory Board for the ACS Two-Year College (2YC) Recognition Program, as well as other leadership activities for ACS.

Kevin said the goal of the ACS 2YC Recognition Program is to provide accreditation to two-year schools and departments that provide excellent chemical education to their students, by promoting and assessing skills and competencies needed to prepare students for successful transfer and completion of degrees that lead to careers in the chemical sciences.

The Recognition Program also promotes effective practices and innovation in the first two years of chemistry education.

Kevin also was asked to serve as co-host of the ACS Two-Year College Chemistry Consortium’s (2YC3) professional development webinar series.

In addition, Kevin was awarded National Science Foundation subgrants for the next two years to develop classroom demonstrations and new chemistry labs for 2YC3.

Kevin said the demos and labs will focus on the use of a thermal imaging camera, so students can “see the heat.”

“This grant support will contribute to co-op experiences for Cincinnati State students,” Kevin said. “Ultimately, many students will benefit by being able to connect the concept of heat and heat transfer that they learn about through lectures to what they can ‘see’ using the camera.”

The American Chemical Society is a non-profit organization founded in 1876 and chartered by the U.S. Congress. The organization’s mission is “to advance scientific knowledge, empower a global community, and champion scientific integrity.”
