Faculty Senate shared Adjunct Satisfaction Survey results with administration & Board; Senate is hosting focus groups for adjunct instructors in May

May 1, 2024

In Fall Semester 2023, the Faculty Senate conducted an Adjunct Satisfaction Survey to gather insights about the experiences and concerns of adjunct faculty at Cincinnati State.

Nearly 25% of adjuncts responded and the Senate prepared a report on the results, which was delivered to College administrators and to the College’s Board of Trustees in March 2024.

Several Trustees said they appreciate the Faculty Senate’s continued efforts to bring attention to adjunct faculty concerns and agree that additional changes and improvements are needed.

Key findings from the survey included:

  • Most adjunct faculty reported being satisfied or neutral regarding College communication channels,
    academic support services, and facilities.
  • Areas of concern and improvement included compensation, professional development
opportunities, and the need for streamlined communication tailored to adjuncts.

Now, Faculty Senate is inviting adjunct faculty to participate in focus groups to share additional information about adjunct experiences and opportunities for the College to make improvements including, but not limited to, increasing compensation for adjuncts.

Information collected from focus groups will be aggregated and used anonymously in any reports prepared in the future.

  • The focus group sessions are for adjunct faculty who do not also work in a full-time faculty or staff role at the College.
  • All focus groups will be conducted via Zoom but will not be recorded. The conversation will be facilitated by members of Faculty Senate.
  • All of the focus group sessions will cover the same topics, with questions based on areas identified in the Satisfaction Survey Report.

Registration isn’t needed– adjunct faculty can simply log onto Zoom for the focus group you want to attend:

Current adjunct faculty received Outlook calendar invitations for all four focus groups, but it’s not necessary to attend more than one session.

Also, the Faculty Senate is proposing amending the Senate’s Constitution and Bylaws to increase the number of adjunct representatives on Senate from one to two.

Information about the proposed change was sent to all faculty on April 25 via email from FacultySenate@cincinnatistate.edu.

Comments about the proposed change must be sent to the Senate email address by 5 p.m. on Monday, May 6. Voting on the proposed change will take place after comments are received and reviewed by the Senate.

Adjunct faculty with questions can contact Faculty Senate President Milene Donlin (milene.donlin@cincinnatistate.edu) or the Adjunct Representative on Senate, Alex Evans (alexander.evans@cincinnatistate.edu).
