Faculty Senate members assisted at Freestore Foodbank

Nov 20, 2023

Members of the Cincinnati State Faculty Senate spent the morning of November 10 giving back to the community by volunteering at the Freestore Foodbank.

Senators’ activities included gleaning donated produce, which meant working inside a large walk-in cooler to sort edible from rotten produce, and then putting the “good stuff” into boxes to be immediately delivered to needy households.

Then, Senate members stocked the shelves and the freezers in the Freestore Foodbank’s recently-opened Bea Taylor Market.

  • The market is available to anyone who is experiencing food insecurity– including Cincinnati State students.
  • Shoppers can visit once a month in November and December, and twice in other months, to get 35 lbs. of non-perishable items and some fresh and frozen food items, at no cost.
  • For more information, visit https://freestorefoodbank.org/bea-taylor-market.

The Senators also toured the Freestore Foodbank’s new warehouse located near Riverside, south of Price Hill. The Cincinnati organization is the only Feeding America center in this region and supplies food to Ohio, Kentucky, and Indiana.

Faculty Senate plans to coordinate another volunteer event in Spring Semester that will be open to all faculty who want to participate in a community service activity.
