“Spark” your professional development at Lunch-&-Learn sessions starting Sep. 15

The Office of Online Learning and the College-Wide Professional Development Committee invite faculty members and other interested employees to a series of Lunch-&-Learn events, where you can investigate new resources and build new skills.

Fall Semester programs include topics that were requested in responses to the Faculty Senate’s Spring survey about professional development interests.

If you have questions, contact Dr. Stephanie Stafford, Assistant Dean of Online Learning, at stephanie.stafford@cincinnatistate.edu.

The Fall “Spark” Lunch-&-Learn series includes:

  • Friday, September 15, noon to 2 p.m. – Maxient Reporting for Student Behaviors – In-Person

Members of the College’s Behavioral Intervention Team (BIT) will describe how to use online Maxient reports to address student behavior concerns, and help foster a safe and supportive campus environment. Learn to craft effective reports, understand the processes that take place after you submit a report, and explore student support strategies.
  • Thursday, October 5, 1 to 2 p.m. – Infusing a Growth Mindset Culture Throughout Your Courses – Virtual

Dr. Beth Faller, Acting Director of the Center for the Enhancement of Teaching & Learning at the University of Cincinnati, will discuss how to recognize and develop a growth mindset culture in your courses, by signaling through your teaching practices, policies, and implicit and explicit messages that student ability can be improved over time, with effort and feedback.

This workshop invites instructors to think more intentionally about the mindset culture of your courses, and to learn to craft messages that contribute to a growth mindset culture at key points in a course, including the start of the semester, before important exams or assignments, when providing feedback on student performance, and at the end of the semester.

The workshop is based on resources created by the College Transition Collaborative and will be open to instructors from other Ohio colleges and universities through the Ohio College Teaching Consortium.

Friday, October 6, noon to 2 p.m. – Overview of Cincinnati State Student Services and Disability Services – Virtual

Soni Hill (Senior Director of Student Success and Development) and the Student Services team will describe Cincinnati State’s diverse student services and how to connect students with resources that include Counseling, tailored support for Veterans and International students, and much more. In addition, you’ll learn how the Office of Disability Services manages accommodations and how faculty can ensure student inclusion and help empower students.

Friday, October 20, noon to 2 p.m. – GoReact: A Tool for Authentic Assessment – Virtual

The Office of Online Learning will introduce GoReact, a tool that helps instructors provide feedback and support to students as they develop their communication and presentation skills. GoReact provides instructors and students with a platform for video recording, sharing, and evaluating presentations and can be used in a wide range of courses, disciplines, and course delivery formats. Representatives from GoReact will discuss possible uses of the tool and answer your questions.
