Nursing clinical student helped avert a patient problem

A Spring semester Nursing clinical student from Cincinnati State, Joseph Macejkom, received kudos for a “great catch” at Bethesda North Hospital on Apr. 8.

According to Jennifer Weaver, Tri-Health Manager of Corporate Clinical Education, Joe entered a patient room and observed the patient having respiratory difficulty.

• Joe quickly recognized that a previous caregiver had not correctly reattached tubing that was part of the patient’s breathing equipment following a treatment.
   
• Joe obtained vital signs, had the patient cough and deep breathe, and sent a peer to get the instructor.
   
• After the correct tubing was reattached, the patient’s breathing returned to the appropriate level.

Ms. Weaver expressed thanks to Joe, his student peers in the NUR 201 clinical cohort, and clinical adjunct instructor Kristen Bagnall for their quick and important action.
