Main Building Recovery Project – Progress Report for week of Nov. 9

Nov 12, 2020

Progress reports on the efforts to assess and repair damage to the Main Building will be provided regularly in Daily News.

Highlights for the week that ended Nov. 6 and work ongoing this week, as reported by Vice President of Administration Lawra Baumann, include:

  • All 5 boilers have been installed and tied into the temporary electrical panel. Two new boilers are sufficient to provide minimal heat needed to prevent freezing of pipes.

  • Some air handlers that distribute the heat still need to be replaced, including 3 air handlers in the tunnels, and 1 that provides heat for the Conference Center area.

  • Restoring electricity is the biggest challenge and the focus is on repairing wiring in A and B Wings.
    • B-wing rewiring has made good progress; we are waiting for delivery of a transformer that needs replacement in B Wing.
    • Rewiring of A-wing is likely to start this week.

  • Scaffolding that is needed to complete electrical repairs in the boiler/mechanical room will be rigged this week. Materials and equipment for electrical repairs in the boiler/mechanical room have been ordered.

  • The chiller design has been finalized, and 2 chillers have been ordered, with 10-week lead time for delivery.

  • Repair and restoration of controls and building automation system alarms continues. This includes separating the HPB controls/alarms from the Main Building system.

  • Construction drawings are being prepared for the request that will go to the State for required permits.

  • Abatement of hazardous waste is nearly complete in the tunnels and crawl spaces. Some abatement is occurring in the boiler/mechanical room.
