Eight students from the Cincinnati State Upward Bound program at Mt. Healthy Jr/Sr High School attended the annual Ohio TRIO student leadership conference April 28-30 in Sandusky, Ohio.

Cincinnati State Upward Bound student Jayla Turner (center of photo) was selected for a TRIO Trailblazer Award, recognizing her commitment to education, leadership and perseverance.

Jayla is seen above with Upward Bound staff members Allyson Knue and Arlene Brown and the current and incoming Ohio TRIO presidents Adam Cinderich and DJ Greene-Ndiay.

Another conference highlight was recognition of former Cincinnati State Upward Bound student and TRIO Trailblazer Award winner Tye Compton, who was commended for his commitment to TRIO. Currently, Tye is a Howard University intern in Senator Sherrod Brown’s office.

The CState Upward Bound students (photo below) attended conference sessions on a variety of topics, such as financial literacy, college readiness, and healthy relationships. They also participated in personal leadership development activities.

Several students said this event was their first professional conference experience.

Freshman Joselyn Hernandez-Nicasio said, “I would recommend [the conference] to other students because you learn about how to be a leader and other topics that will help you in the outside world.”

The Cincinnati State Upward Bound program is one of the federally-funded education TRiO grant program hosted by Cincinnati State; the other is Student Support Services.
