Faculty Senate survey shows support for vaccine mandate

In a survey conducted by the Cincinnati State Faculty Senate, over 70% of the full-time faculty expressed support for a possible COVID-19 vaccine mandate at the College.

The survey, which was conducted from Sep. 14 to 20, was open to all full-time and part-time (adjunct) faculty members. Over 300 faculty members (137 full-time and 169 part-time) responded to the survey.

Faculty Senate President Lesli Rice said the Senate conducted the survey to learn about faculty views and to provide input for President Monica Posey in College decision-making about a possible mandate.

  • 95% of all full-time faculty participated in the survey. About 72% of those who replied favored a vaccine mandate for students and employees.
  • About 18% of the College's part-time faculty participated. About 66% of those who replied favored a vaccine mandate.
  • More than 60% of all respondents (both full-time and part-time) said a vaccine mandate should go into effect as soon as possible.
  • In answer to a question about vaccine status, 91% of full-time faculty respondents and 85% of part-time faculty respondents said they are fully or partially vaccinated.

Results of the Senate's survey were shared with President Posey as well as with faculty members.

  • The Faculty Senate recommended to Dr. Posey that additional surveys should be conducted to learn about the opinions and concerns of other College employees as well as Cincinnati State students.
  • The Senate also recommended the College should implement a public health education initiative, in partnership with local health institutions, to provide education for the College community regarding COVID-19 and how to prevent and mitigate its effects.

New barista machine at Bakery Hill provides numerous tasty beverages

Bakery Hill is open, and welcomes Clifton Campus students and College employees to enjoy a wide range of coffee-based beverages (as well as chocolate and vanilla drinks) made possible through a newly-installed Nescafe Barista Bean-to-Cup machine.

Chef Michael VanFleet said the Barista machine can be used to prepare a varied selection of high-quality drinks, and is more efficient to operate and maintain than equipment used previously to create specialty drinks such as lattes, cappuccinos, and specialty hot chocolate.

Click the menu at right to download a list of the hot and iced specialty drinks now offered at Bakery Hill.

The Barista machine is a sealed environment that grinds coffee beans and dispenses flavorings from individual packaging provided by Nescafe. The only human intervention required for each serving is pressing the "dispense" button on the outside of the machine.

"The Barista machine promotes safety while dispensing drinks we are sure Bakery Hill customers will enjoy!" said Chef VanFleet.

Bakery Hill is open from 7:30 to 11:30 a.m. on Monday through Friday.

Each week on "Free Coffee Friday," customers can get a free small coffee or hot tea at Bakery Hill from 7:30 to 9:30 a.m.

It's Cybersecurity Awareness Month

October is Cybersecurity Awareness Month, and Cincinnati State's Information Technology Services Department encourages all employees and students to refresh your knowledge of how to stay safe online, whether you are at work, at home, at school, or on the go with your digital devices.

The theme (and hashtag) for the month is #BeCyberSmart, and the focus for the first week is "Start with the Basics" (click to download PDF).

Basic elements of online security include:

  • Make a long, unique pass phrase (not just a word)
  • Use 2-factor authentication (as is required for your Cincinnati State account)
  • When in doubt, throw it out (by not clicking or downloading items in unfamiliar links)
  • Keep a clean machine (by keeping your software up to date)
