Board of Trustees awards tenure to three faculty members

Three Cincinnati State faculty members were awarded tenure by a vote of the College Board of Trustees at the Mar. 6 Board meeting.

The newly-tenured faculty members are:

    • Ray Harmon, Computer Software Development (Center for Innovative Technologies)
      • Ray re-designed several Information Technology courses, leading to improvements in student retention, and providing students with additional options for portfolio projects
      • He founded and is a faculty advisor for the President's Ambassadors program
      • He serves as Cincinnati State's representative to the state-wide Ohio Faculty Senate of Two-Year Colleges
    • Holly McArthur, Early Childhood Education (Humanities & Sciences)
      • In addition to teaching, Holly advises over 100 ECE students each year, and serves as the faculty advisor for the Early Childhood Education Club
      • She assisted in efforts leading to program accreditation by the National Association for Education of Young Children
      • She developed the “Reading is Great at Cincinnati State” program for the Emergent Literacy course
      • She serves on advisory councils for several high school ECE programs

    • Judy Marshall, Management (Business Technologies)

      • She serves on the college-wide Academic Policies & Curriculum Committee and divisional committees
      • She is a Lead Instructor for the Goldman Sachs 10,000 Small Businesses program
      • She served on teams that helped develop the structure for the Center for Teaching & Learning and the Career Center

Prior to the Trustees' vote, Provost Robbin Hoopes stated that having tenured faculty helps ensure that the College meets the academic standards of the Higher Learning Commission needed for institutional accreditation.

Provost Hoopes also said all three candidates have made "wonderful contributions" to the College.

President Monica Posey noted that all three tenure candidates have extensive industry experience, which is an important consideration for Cincinnati State faculty.

How tenure is achieved:

To be eligible for tenure, faculty members must complete five years of full-time service.

Then, the faculty members complete a six-month review process. During that time their qualifications and contributions to the College are examined by the Faculty Tenure Committee, the division Dean, the Provost, and the President. The Board's vote is the final step in the review process.

The process steps leading to tenure are defined in the AAUP Unit 1 contract, and state that tenure is awarded in recognition of "demonstrated excellence and consistent contributions" to the College.

Following the award of tenure, a faculty member may use the title "Professor."
