Common Time Dec. 10 focus is creating "culture of improvement" through assessment activities

Common Time on Monday, Dec. 10, will examine the Program Self-Study process and steps to creating a "culture of assessment and improvement."

Associate Dean of Health & Public Safety Denise Rohr will discuss how programs and departments can develop their plan to assess one-third of the program learning outcomes each year.

The session will also discuss how to use the data from annual assessment activities to guide improvements in programs and in student and faculty experiences.

Common Time takes place from 3 to 4:30 p.m. in the Conference Center, and is open to all College employees.

The session will be available through live-streaming media at for those who cannot attend in person.

Parking Services moved to ATLC, with new parking management provider

Cincinnati State recently welcomed a new parking management provider, LAZ Parking, and a new location for the Parking Services office on Clifton Campus.

The Parking Services office is now on the second floor of the ATLC, with its own window next to the Cashier's Office windows.

The Cashier's and Parking Services windows are adjacent to Student Activities in ATLC 204.

LAZ Parking was awarded the contract to manage parking services for the College after an extensive procurement and interviewing process. LAZ Parking is the second-largest parking services company in the US, with clients in numerous states and cities.

Problems with parking gates & kiosks have been fixed

Last week, the parking equipment on Clifton Campus had a compliance update to the programming, which created some temporary malfunctions to parking gates and kiosks.

These malfunctions caused some temporary service challenges for employees, students, and visitors exiting and entering the garages and parking lots.

The malfunctions also caused the payment kiosks to incorrectly charge customers more than the daily rate of $5. The College has not changed the parking rates.

All parking-related equipment has been reprogrammed and is now operating as it should.

The College apologizes for the temporary problems with parking gates and payment kiosks, and appreciates the understanding of those who were affected by the inconveniences.

College employees have a chance to win prizes if you share #CStateSpirit2019 on your social media accounts during the next six months, along with photos or video of yourself in public venues outside the College, wearing your Cincinnati State-branded gear.

To launch the campaign, new Cincinnati State t-shirts were distributed at the Holiday Lunch on Dec. 6.

If you missed getting your shirt, you can pick one up in the Marketing Department Office, Main 175, starting Monday, Dec. 10.

The spirit campaign will continue until June 30, 2019. Then, winners will be selected randomly from all qualified entries that have been posted.

First prize is a $250 VISA card. Second prize is a $100 VISA card, and third prize is a $50 VISA card.

  • Each photo or video you post (along with the #CStateSpirit2019 hashtag) will count as a separate entry-- provided that you're not repeating the same image, and provided that you're wearing "official" Cincinnati State gear that includes the College logo.
  • Your photo or video will be even better if it shows you talking about the College with someone who doesn't already know how great it is to be part of Cincinnati State.
    The primary purpose of the campaign is to "spread the word" about our College throughout the tri-state, with the help of dedicated and enthusiastic College employees.

  • While you're encouraged to wear attire that displays Cincinnati State's name anytime you're in public, only attire that includes an official College logo will count for the spirit contest.

All Cincinnati State employees are eligible to participate, and the winner must be an employee at the time of the drawing.

The #CStateSpirit2019 campaign also includes “Spirit Friday Giveaways” once each month from January through June. Look for more information in 2019 about what you need to do to get the attention of a “Secret Spirit Spotter.”

Brewing students will tap a new craft beer on Dec. 12

BREW 100 student James Czar, Taft's Head Brewer Jared Hamilton, and BREW 100 student Brittany Frey examine the equipment used to brew their new craft beer.

The Brewing Science Program invites members of the College community (of drinking age) to the tapping of the Fall Semester Beer on Wednesday, Dec. 12, starting at 5 p.m. at Taft's Brewpourium, 4831 Spring Grove Ave. in Cincinnati.

Students in the BREW 100 "Introduction to Craft Beer" class designed a pineapple and passion fruit hazy IPA along with Jared Hamilton, head brewer of Taft's Brewing.

The beer was brewed in November by Jared at Taft's Ale House, with help from students in the class.

Blackboard upgrade takes place Dec. 30 to Jan. 2; training sessions are available

Cincinnati State’s Blackboard Learning Management System will undergo a version upgrade from Dec. 30, 2018, to Jan. 2, 2019.

The upgrade will begin Sunday, Dec. 30, at 12:30 a.m. and will be completed by the start of business on Wednesday, Jan. 2.

Faculty members are encouraged to prepare Spring 2019 Blackboard course sites at your convenience prior to Dec. 30.

Work done prior to Dec. 30 will be intact after the upgrade is completed.

  • No special processes are needed for Fall courses in Blackboard either before or after the upgrade.
  • Requests for Spring Semester Meta-Courses received no later than noon on Thursday, Dec. 20, will be completed by the close of business on Dec. 20. Requests received later than Dec. 20 at noon will be processed starting on Jan. 2.

Environmental Day for high schools was a successful learning event

The CState Environmental Engineering Technology (EVET) programs held another successful “Sustainable is Obtainable” Environmental Day for high school students and teachers on Nov. 7 on Clifton Campus.

About 100 students and teachers from Ohio and Kentucky high schools attended.

Participating schools included Cincinnati Digital Academy, Hughes Zoo Academy, Notre Dame Academy, Dixie Heights HS, Scott HS, and Simon Kenton HS.

Dr. Ann Gunkel, Program Chair for EVET, said, "We heard lots of positive feedback from the teachers and students in attendance. They thoroughly enjoyed the learning sessions and hands-on activities." (See event photos above and below.)

Ann added, "Many dedicated professionals at the College assisted with the event by giving presentations or by helping to make sure the facilities, equipment, and food met our visitors' needs."

One of the Environmental Day sponsors, Consolidated Analytical Systems (CAS), has a special connection to Cincinnati State.

The company was formed in 2012 by Cincinnati State EVET graduates Seth and Meredith (Haft) Cloran (seen below with EVET faculty and staff) and Tom Platter. The three first met as students in the 1998 Environmental Mountain Ecology course field trip to Colorado, led by Dr. Gunkle and Senior Lab Technician Gail Quinlan.

CAS was formed to fill an industry need for specialists who understand ambient air quality monitors. The company started with six employees working in a 5,000 square foot building on Spring Grove Ave. in Northside.

Now, CAS is an industry leader in providing fully operational, turn-key ambient air quality monitoring shelters and enclosures that are stand-alone laboratories. CAS clients include the US Enviornmental Protection Agency, state and local government agencies, universities, private labs, and industrial companies.
