"Women Walking West" event included CState speaker and attendees
CState participants at the Women Walking West Inaugural Gala included (from left) Yan Li, Najah Khalil, Dr. Leesha Thrower, Manirambona Ernestine, Katrina Rugless, Maggie Oliveira, Kamola Shermatova, and Prekshya Nepal.
Cincinnati State students, faculty, and staff members attended the Inaugural Gala for Women Walking West, held Nov. 1.
This non-profit organization, based in Mason, OH, seeks to support women from around the globe in pursuing their educational and professional goals.
The organization provides scholarships and professional mentors for women like Manirambona Ernestine, a former Cincinnati State student.
Faculty member Maggie Oliveira (English as a Second Language instructor) said Ernestine shared a powerful story about how her family fled their native Burundi to live in refugee camps in Rwanda and Tanzania before immigrating to the US.
After studying ESL at Cincinnati State with Professor Andrea Cheng and completing her Pre-Business Administration degree, Ernestine transferred UC where she double-majored in finance and accounting.
She has since graduated and recently accepted a full-time position as an accountant.
Maggie said, "Women Walking West paired Ernestine with a mentor in banking who provided guidance and support for her along the way."
You can learn more about Ernestine and the Women Walking West organization in this interview on the program "InFocus", from the City of Cincinnati's CitiCable.
CState International Student Affairs Interim Director Katrina Rugless, who attended the Gala as a guest of Conversa Language Center, said, “It is important for the College to be immersed in partnerships with the broader international community, locally and regionally."
"It was great that Cincinnati State students and staff were able to be involved in the Women Walking West event," she added.

"Girls on the Run" had CState support
Cincinnati State's Cheer Zone was filled with energy to inspire "Girls on the Run" participants.
More than 3,500 girls ages 8 to 13, and their adult running buddies, were part of the “Girls on the Run” 5K walk/run that took place Nov. 17.
As runners left the Ohio riverfront and entered Kentucky, a vigorous Cincinnati State Cheer Zone (seen in photos above and below) supported the runners with smiles, shouts, and high fives.
Cheer Zone participants included faculty members Meredith Effler, Kathleen Pickens, Barb Ratliff, and Mark Tiemeier, as well as students from the Phi Theta Kappa academic honor society.
Girls on the Run is an international program for girls in 3rd through 8th grade that encourages running-– and in the process helps girls build character, self-confidence, and a sense of empowerment.
Girls on the Run envisions “a world where every girl knows and activates her limitless potential and is free to boldly pursue her dreams.”
If you (or your College club or group) would like to join the CState Cheer Zone for the Girls on the Run spring event, on May 11, 2019, please contact Meredith (email@example.com).
